SEO Geeks Newsletter - Vol.84 - February 7th 2011 - Search obsessed notes from another week in the trenches...

Hello Blogger Yang saya cintai, Dave here with another week's worth of search geekiness.

What's new? For those that might be interested we have two podcasts each week on SEO Dojo Radio. And we've also released a line of funny SEO T-shirts which we're damned proud of...

Lead Story

Removing Sites is NOT the Answer

Yes, I know.. the 'real' big story last week was about Google V Bing, who copied what. But as I sat to write I realized that it's not really that important to SEOs. Seriously, this was more engaging drama than something worth talking about among us geeks. So we shall forego that.

Instead I wanted to quickly touch on a related event to all of that. It was part of the same session and later confirmed, that Blekko was booting the top 20 'spam sites' from their index. An interesting move considering there are explicit feedback tools in place for users to filter stuff.

Blekko, Can I Please Have My Spam Back? - SEO Skeptic

Can you imagine if Google had done this? WOW. The backlash would be massive. This is why I believe there really has to be an algorithmic approach to dealing with thin content on the web and in the SERPs. Otherwise it becomes too subjective and verges on censorship if taken too far.

It also doesn't scale well.. So let's just leave this one to die and find new ways to deal with this problem and stop hailing Blekko for a move that we'd never stand for from the Big 2. M'kay?

On with this week's goodiness...

Talk of the Town

10 reasons you're not an 'advanced' SEO - when I saw the title on this one, the question arises; what exactly IS advanced? Ian goes off with a fun rant and a call to get geek!

Purchased Link Penalties: There's No Time to Waste - this post seemed to ruffle a few feathers in all sides of the SEO world. But, at the end of the day, it's worth having hear and something to consider.

Google: Bing Is Cheating, Copying Our Search Results - yes, we've put it in here, but really, it doesn't have much of an affect on us. It is more just a freak show that we can't turn away from. This is the original post from Danny, if you want more, search it... there was a TON of blabber on it all.

Battening Down the Hatches for a Link Bait Brainstorm – Jennifer highlights the importance of getting diversified inputs when crafting link bait campaigns. I am certainly one fella that's learned the value here over the years, so it's deffo worth a read.

How Matt Cutts Leveraged The Stack Overflow And Hacker News Communities In - Michael (Van Der Mar) was also on the war path last week. Seriously, I wouldn't want to be Matt last week... man, coming from all sides or what? Also from Michael, see; Redefining The Phrase "Content Farms"

A Link Building Blueprint: The Foundation - this one, from Debra Mastaler, looks at the not-so-often talked about foundational link building. This is really at the core of any program and I thought it worth highlighting this week. Not earth shaking, but Deb's always a good read.

10 SEO Questions with David Harry – I stopped by Dean's blog to enlighten and entertain the readership. Did I pull it off? Probably not, but it's always nice that someone cares right?

The Art of Big Corporate SEO - Anthony Verre had a great and in-depth look at some of the challenges that come with working corporate SEO situations. I know some of these systemic problems all too well. Enjoyed the post... cathartic even.
